Do not forget that R is another widely used software, but I have not had a chance to examine it yet. 1) Matlab because of its numerical calculation power, 2) GNU Octave because of its resemblance to Matlab and 3) Python because of its strength and popularity. To answer this question, I myself tried three of them to see how they fit with my needs. It might be a strategic question as a researcher likely invests years to develop his or her research by using one of these environments. Others such as Python, R, GNU Octave, Scilab, SageMath and Julia are among the free or open source alternatives. Some such as Matlab, Mathematica and Maple are proprietary software (not free). As a researcher, I get this question quite frequently: what scientific software should I use? In fact, there are plenty of good scientific software out there.
